How to get Free Flights for Almost 2 Years in the USA for You and your Companion!

New update as of 1/7/2016: We’re getting reports from friends that Chase is a bit stricter now when you try to sign up for multiple cards at the same time. Everything in this post below is still valid and doable, but we recommend you sign up for the first card, then wait at least 90 days before you sign up for the second one.
As of today, the Personal Southwest Premier gives 50k points, along with the Business Southwest Premier card that also gives 50k points. You can sign up for these two cards to get the companion pass. Remember, business cards are a bit trickier to sign up, and you most likely won’t get instance approval.  After signing up for the business card, you’ll have to call in and answer a few questions so make sure you are ready for that. If you are not comfortable, you can wait until the Personal Southwest Plus card offers 50k points again (currently at 25k).

Remember, you can google something like “Southwest Plus Card 50k” to see if there are any links that offer 50k points.

Many of our friends often wonder how Tam and I travel so much around US, often visiting a new state or city every month or so.  Well, the secret is, those flights were actually free for the both of us.  We only had to pay for the hotel (see my budget hotel booking guide), and the car rental.  So the average amount we spend for a domestic weekend trip to places in the US, is only about $500, which includes hotel, car rental, and food (free flights yay!)

The Southwest Companion Pass is one of the best travel deals that are out there today.  I will explain it in detail in the video below. The map above shows all the places Southwest fly to, that you could go for free!

Basically, you know how when you sign up for a credit card, the card will sometimes give you like 10,000 points, enough to redeem for like one $100 gift card right?  Well this is similar, except you are getting about $3800 worth of flights for free, not just $100 dollars.

Now, getting this deal requires a good understanding, therefore I have created the video below to explain it to you.  It is simply too complicated to explain in writing.  Please watch the video to get a better understanding…

How to get the Southwest Companion Pass (15 Minutes)

After watching the video, there is much more details on the Companion Pass at this website below:

  1. Awesome post you guys. Quick question: When you say you have the rest of the year and the following year to spend your points, is that after you get the cards or after you’ve spent your required amounts? For instance, if we got the cards this month but don’t meet the $10K spending until January 2016, do we have until the end of 2017 or 2016 to spend the points?

    Thanks a bunch!

    1. It is after you get the required points amount. Remember, all your points have to POST on the same year for it to count. So if you got the card today (which is not recommended), you have to meet your 2k spending for each card in Jan 2016, so that the 50k points will POST in Jan 2016 for it to count for 2016, meaning you’ll get it for 2016 and 2017.

If you end up getting the 110k points this year, then you’ll have it only for this year and next year.

In other words, it’s best to sign up for it, say, in Nov or Dec. Don’t meet the 2k spend requirement until Jan 2016. Once in Jan 2016, you’ll get your 104k points. Then you have the rest of 2016 to get the other $6k spend to reach 110,000 points. So say you meet the rest of the spending in March 2016, you’ll get the Companion pass which will be valid for the rest of 2016 and 2017. Which mean you’ll get it for almost 2 years! If it’s a bit confusing, feel free to msg me and I can explain more 🙂

  2. Hey outstanding blog! Does running a blog like this require a massive amount work?
I have absolutely no understanding of coding however I was hoping to
start my own blog in the near future. Anyhow, should you have any recommendations or tips for new blog owners please share.
I understand this is off subject however I just needed to
    ask. Thanks!

    1. Hi Pauline! Thanks for visiting our blog. We hope you like it :).
Starting a blog is actually pretty easy, you actually don’t need to know any coding. You can go to wordpress.com and sign up for a free blog to see how it works. Basically you just pick the design you want, and then you can start posting blog entries. The blog is auto-generated by the template you choose, so you don’t actually have to do any coding. So give it a try! Now in terms of work, once you have it up and running, the work is mostly writing up the blog entries, uploading photos, and formatting the page. The amount of work depends on how often you blog and the content you want to show. If it’s simple, it shouldn’t be too bad. Hope this helps!
